Recently all eyes have been glued to the TV and internet to get up to date information about Hurricane Sandy, and see how devastating and unprecedented this storm has been to tens of millions of Americans. To witness the incredible destruction over our television sets and computer screens doesn’t give the reality of the situation any real justice, and we all feel for our customers and vendors who were affected first-hand by this terrible storm.
Although we here on the West Coast were not directly affected by the storm, the East Coast companies we work with on a daily basis have encountered disruption to their business due to power outages, flooding, and more. They also have dozens (perhaps hundreds) of employees who have had to deal with the effects of the storm on a personal level. Some are living without power or otherwise dealing with the aftermath of the storm, such as long gas lines and limited transportation options. Others may have lost their homes, their personal items, and possibly even their loved ones and pets. We wanted to send our love and support to these people, and make sure they know we are thinking about them and their families during this incredibly difficult, frustrating, scary, and exhausting time in their lives.
Here at Sew What? and Rent What?, we have also tried to consider the storm’s effect on our customers and vendors. For orders scheduled to ship out from our companies this week to the East Coast, we have made sure to double-check with our customers before shipping. The last thing we wanted to do was ship an order out to New York City via overnight service, only to have it sit in a Fed Ex storage facility indefinitely because the Ship To address was inaccessible due to storm damage. We have also made sure to be supportive of our East Coast vendors, understanding that while they may be “back in business,” they are still dealing with the aftermath of the storm and may be unable to respond as quickly as usual.
We want to send our thoughts to all affected during this extremely trying time. If you are interested in helping those affected by the storm, please visit the Red Cross website for information, or text REDCROSS to 90999 to give $10 to American Red Cross Disaster Relief. This country hasn’t seen a natural catastrophe with such destruction and devastation since Hurricane Katrina, and we need to remember that the entire North East part of the country will need our help, support and prayers for the months and years to come.
